New Years are good for they mean beginnings, hope, celebrations, and Resolutions (but only when they stick).
Every year, people across the world decide to loose weight, gain financial freedom, start doing what they always wanted to do (and stop doing what they never should have done in the first place).
They aspire for a healthy body, bigger bank balance, and a life of purpose and passion.
There is not an IOTA of a bad thing in here.
In fact, it can’t get better than this – Good People, Good Intentions, and trying to accomplish something good (let’s assume so here, at least).
Resolutions: Promises made to self, that will make your life better
(at least you feel so).
There is just one small problem in here – Most of them die before January.
One more actually – We believe that no matter what we are going to stick to them.
Why do so many people fail to keep up with their resolutions? and
How can one ensure that their resolutions outlive January?
The Second question first:
Heard of 21-day rule?
Let’s not talk about the reason behind it but ONE thing is for sure – PERSISTENCE & FOCUS holds the holy grail to making Resolutions last.
The real secret is to convert resolutions into routines and subsequently habits.
Is it tough?
Yes, if you have too many distractions and you don’t know which way to move.
Is it doable?
Yes, All you have to do is get a map and don’t fall into pitfalls again and again.
Now the First Question Second:
Mojo of Small Things presents 5 Reasons WHY Resolutions fail and What to do about them?
WHY don’t you have a WHY?
Once you have your WHY sorted- You are ready for your journey.
Want to loose weight?
If you just want to look good, you will walk a different path, but if you want to feel good you will follow an entirely different path.
Feeling good entails that you adopt a holistic approach to loosing weight, which may involve sleep, eating right, hydration, moving around more frequently, and subsequently adopting a lifestyle that suits your goals and you.
Whereas loosing weight just to look good may walk you to the path of just focusing on the body part which has more fat around, and this one kind of workout, one kind of food choice, and one routine.
I hope it makes sense?
Same logic for financial freedom:
You will do WHAT your WHY says!
Whether it is just to save enough money for a holiday or a wedding vs. Saving to get reasonably rich.
Too Much To Get Real Too Early.
I know you are fed up, that’s why the RESOLUTION.
SO you want it quicker, plenty and forever too?
Whether it is about that Greek God Body, Fat Bank Balance, Your Own Business, or the Lifestyle you always wanted – You cannot get it all really quick.
Here is WHY?
For a drastic change to come and stay for long it needs to come ‘Slow – Sure- Small – Steady’; that’s how nature works.
Some goals are tough to reach (and that is OK), but some are unreasonable (they do more harm than good).
SO trying to loose weight too quickly, trying to make too much money too quickly is surely going to get in trouble too soon.
Where is the Preparation?
If you follow what works, then it will most likely work.
Most of us gobble too much soon – which means changing your diet, your workout regime, your sleep pattern: ALL AT ONCE.
Not only it becomes too much, but it also becomes impractical.
Why not change your diet and sleep a little earlier, so that when you move to a new workout regime your body is not shocked?
Habits that Build and Habits that Sabotage.
I can’t work out because I can’t wake up early in the morning.
I can’t wake up early in the morning because I use my phone in my bed.
I use the phone in my bed because . . .
All of us have a few habits which can sabotage our success (a life of Purpose, Passion, and Performance), and we still hold them, dear.
This is not because we have an affinity for them but we never realize or pay attention to how they are stopping us from reaching our full potential.
Focus on letting go of habits that make you feel distracted, unfocused, unloved, and under-nourished.
Which means let go of addictions, and clutter – Why?
Here is the reason: Addiction makes you do not so great things automatically (Hey Fella! Now you have less control of what you want to do), and Clutter makes you feel tired by ushering in decision fatigue.
Free up focus and Energy for What matters!
Talking in terms of lists:
it may mean going for a device detox,
not checking your emails compulsively,
not consuming too much of anything, and
not being vulnerable to toxic people/situations/emotions.
It is not, but this going to be worth the effort.
Your company defines your commitment.
If you hang out with four compulsive liar’s, You will be the fifth,
If you hang out with four self-made millionaires, You will be the fifth.
Your friends define
what you talk about, and
also the type of choices you will end up making.
Going to a restaurant with your fitness freak friends will mean that you will be most likely to order something healthier (as compared to while going for family meals or so).
Similar goes for whether you want to make more money, lead a more fulfilling life, start a business, or go travel.
Find a community (a tribe is a better word though) of people you want to be like, Be part of it, and see your life change for better.
Is that all?
But you also promised to share how to make them stick?
Here is it:
- Find your WHY!
- Seek Help to design realistic goals.
A professional or someone who has done it before won’t hurt much (Here is an extra safe option: Seek an expert that is part of a vibrant community of experts – that way he won’t act like MY way or NO way).
Go slow and Step wise.
(Trying to do too much too soon may not only tire you but also make the whole thing uninteresting- So what’s the fun of doing it that way?)
- Design habits that make you feel less distracted and clutter free.
- Choose your company based on the results you want to achieve.
One thing, Always offer what you have to make the community more vibrant (Give more than you take).
- Keep a provision for breaks and don’t be too harsh on yourself
(if you know your why, are prepared and have a company to vouch for- small breaks won’t hurt).
When you fail- Start again without waiting for the next year to drum into your life.
Is that all?
This is just the beginning.
